Votre question ne se situe pas en marge de la toponymie, mais au coeur même de celle-ci. En effet, dans les exemples que vous citez, ce n'est pas la syllabe -nay qui est significative, mais la finale -ay. Cette finale est l'un des très nombreux résultats d'un suffixe
gaulois -acos, latinisé en -acum, qui a servi aux Romains lors de la période gallo-romaine (entre le IIe et le IVe siècles) pour
nommer les lieux qu'ils défrichaient et exploitaient : ces nouveaux noms de lieux étaient formés du nom du propriétaire du domaine
rural, le plus souvent romain, auquel était ajouté ce suffixe gaulois ayant une valeur d'appartenance ; associé à un nom de personne, il exprimait la notion de "domaine de..." Ainsi, dans les noms que vous citez, Artenay vient d'un nom d'homme gallo-romain "Artenus" et du suffixe -"acum", Parthenay d'un nom d'homme latin "Parthenus" et du suffixe "-acum" ; un "n" est souvent présent car de nombreux noms latins se terminent par -"nus", mais on trouve aussi des noms en "-ay", comme Chissay (41), qui vient d'un nom d'homme latin "Cassus" et du suffixe "-acum".

Ce suffixe d'appartenance -acum est resté productif assez longtemps pour qu'on le retrouve lié également à des noms de personnes
germaniques, ce qui prouve qu'il a été en usage après les Grandes Invasions.

Par ailleurs, selon les parlers des régions de la Gaule où il était utilisé, le suffixe -acum a donné des résultats très différents,
dont les principaux sont les suivants :
- Dans le sud-ouest de la France, il a donné les noms en -ac : Jonzac, Cognac, Savignac...

- En Picardie, il a donné les noms en -ai : Douai, Cambrai
- En Champagne et Lorraine, il a donné les noms en -ey : Briey, Pompey
- Dans le domaine franco-provençal (Ain, Isère, Rhône), il a donné les noms en -ieu : Ambérieu, Chassieu, Jussieux.

En conclusion, ces formations en -acum ont connu une très vaste et très riche expansion, puisqu'elles constituent actuellement le
1/20e de tous les noms de lieux habités de France.

There is village Savenay near Nantes in France and that could have been written as Savené as well. Arnold Nivelle found the following outstanding piece of text by which the family tree at once came to 1570.

The origin of the word Boek is Beech (the tree) The translation of Boek is Book and Beuk is Beech. The covers of books were originally ade of the wood of the beech. Holt which translates as wood in modern Dutch was originally used as the word for forest, or just a group of trees. If we look at the distribution of the name:

Then we see that it appears relativily most in the province of Drenthe and the same is true for the surname Savenije. It's unbelievable that not more members of both families besides my parents married with each other. There were however two major hurdles to be taken: religion and social status. The family Savenije was Roman Catholic (or as someone once said: " More papist than the pope") and they were small businessmen or shopkeepers, the Boekholt family were Dutch reformed (Calvinists) and laborors, small landowners or landusers. These were, till the middle of the 20th century insurmountable hurdles.
